The actor chosen to play Legolas in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies was Orlando Bloom. At first, fans were disappointed to hear that Legolas would be featuring in The Hobbit movies because he doesnât appear in the book, but Peter Jackson reassured them that it would be done in a fitting way. The director wrote on his Facebook page: âTen years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas.
âIâm excited to announce today that weâll be revisiting Middle-earth with him once more. Iâm thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older â and he doesnât! I guess thatâs why he makes such a wonderful elf.â
Orlando is a British actor from Canterbury, Kent. When he was four, the man he believed to be his dad, Harry Bloom, died of a stroke. Orlando and his sister Samantha were raised by their mother Sonia and a family friend called Colin Stone. When he was thirteen, Orlando was told that Colin was in fact his biological dad.
At school Orlando loved being in plays and after watching the movie The Hustler one Christmas, he decided he wanted to be like Paul Newman â he wanted to be an actor. He joined a community theatre group and took part in poetry and Bible reciting competitions with his sister, which they often won.
